Red Balkans is a longterm inquiry into the relationship of the Balkans to the global matrices of colonialism, modernity, and racial capitalism.

The first event to come out of this inquiry was the 2019 Symposium on Race, Gender, Sexuality and Empire in Southeastern Europe held at the University of Toronto, co-organized by Miglena Todorova, Sunnie Rucker Chang and myself. This event brought together prominent figures in the scholarly study of these issues in the Balkans to discuss challenges facing this nascent field and potential avenues for intellectual collaboration. As a result of this symposium, I released this collaborative reading list.

Throughout this process, ideas are shared via @RedBalkans.
